Taber abrasion testing was developed in the 1930’s and has the ability to rapidly test a broad spectrum of materials which include:
- Plastics
- Ceramics
- Paper
- Leather
- Coatings
- Glazing
Testing of these materials are conducted in accordance with the relevant ASTM standards. The benefit of having abrasion testing conducted on materials is that it provides data on a materials ability to withstand abrasion without the need to install the material in service and wait a considerable period of time to assess its resistance to abrasion.
A specimen 100 mm in diameter is mounted on the platform in the test rig. The platform rotates at a designated speed at which point twin abrasion wheels are lowered onto the specimen with a designated load which contact the specimens surface and produces a rubbing action. After the testing has been completed the wear on the specimen can be expressed as one of the following parameters:
- Mass Loss
- Taber Wear Index
- Volume Loss
- Wear Cycles per mm
The Taber Abrasion testing compliments the other abrasion testing that Exceed Consulting undertake
